How to Make a Wedding Corsage

Pin-on corsages are the traditional floral accessory worn by mothers, grandmothers, and other VIP guests at weddings. They're similar to boutonnieres but slightly larger and pinned to dresses or jackets. This guide covers the classic pin-on technique.

Step by step

  1. 1

Cut all stems short (2 inches)

Trim every stem to 2 inches. Corsages need short stems that can be wired individually.

  2. 2

    Wire each focal flower

Insert floral wire through the base of each spray rose and ranunculus bloom. Wrap each with green floral tape.

  3. 3

    Group flowers into a cluster

Hold the wired focal flowers together in a tight cluster. Add waxflower and small eucalyptus pieces around them.

  4. 4

    Tape the cluster together

Wrap the entire cluster with floral tape, binding all the wire stems into one unit.

  5. 5

    Wrap with ribbon

Wrap the taped base with matching ribbon. Tie a small bow on the back or leave as a clean wrap.

  6. 6

    Attach pearl pin for wearing

Attach a pearl-headed corsage pin through the back of the cluster for pin-on wear.

Pro tips

1

Ask the wearer if they want a wrist corsage instead — many modern clients prefer wrist over pin-on.

2

Keep corsages slightly larger than boutonnieres — about 3 inches vs 2 inches.

3

Avoid lilies and other strongly-scented flowers — corsages are close to the face all day.

Common mistakes to avoid

Making corsages too small — they should be visibly larger than boutonnieres.

Not warning wearers to pin carefully — silk and delicate fabrics tear with corsage pins.

Using wilted flowers — these are worn close to the body and any wilt shows.
