How to Make a Wedding Pomander Ball

Pomander balls (also called 'kissing balls') are spherical floral arrangements hung from ribbon, usually carried by flower girls or hung from aisle chairs. They're traditional but still popular for certain aesthetics. This guide covers the foam-sphere technique.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Prep the foam sphere

Soak a wet foam sphere (or use dry foam for pomanders that won't be worn close to clothing). Attach a ribbon loop through the top for hanging.

  2. 2

    Cut spray rose stems short

Snip each spray rose individually with 1-inch stems. You'll need approximately 60 small bloom 'inserts' to fully cover a 5-inch sphere.

  3. 3

Insert roses densely from the top

Start at the top of the sphere and work downward in rows. Insert each rose so the bloom sits flush against the foam — no visible gaps.

  4. 4

    Fill gaps with waxflower

Use waxflower and small eucalyptus tips to fill any visible gaps or foam showing through. Every square inch should be covered.

  5. 5

    Check all angles

Rotate the sphere and check for uncovered spots. The pomander should look perfectly round with no flat spots.

  6. 6

    Attach decorative ribbon

Tie a final decorative ribbon at the top hanging loop. Trim ribbon tails to desired length.

Pro tips

1

Pomanders for flower girls should be smaller (4 inches) — larger feels awkward for small hands.

2

Use 1 spray rose stem for 4–6 insertions — maximize the stem value.

3

Build on a stable surface (not holding) — rolling pomanders cause inconsistent coverage.

Common mistakes to avoid

Using stems that are too long — they won't sit flush.

Leaving foam visible — looks unfinished.

Making pomanders too big for the wearer — child-size for flower girls.
