How to Make a Wedding Floral Chuppah

A chuppah is a four-post structure with a canopy used in Jewish wedding ceremonies. The floral treatment is different from a standard arch — you're decorating four vertical posts plus (often) a canopy. This guide walks through the full build.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Confirm chuppah structure with venue/client

Find out who is providing the chuppah frame and canopy. Measure posts and canopy edges so you can pre-build greenery to correct lengths.

  2. 2

Pre-build 4 post clusters at studio

Build four matching (or asymmetrically paired) floral clusters at the studio using foam cages. Each cluster should wrap around a post diameter and extend 12+ inches outward with trailing greenery.

  3. 3

    Build canopy greenery separately

If the chuppah has a canopy edge to drape, build a continuous greenery garland using smilax, italian ruscus, and eucalyptus. Keep it loose and foldable for transport.

  4. 4

    Install posts on-site

Attach each floral cluster to the four chuppah posts with zip ties. Position facing outward toward the guests, not inward toward the couple.

  5. 5

    Drape canopy greenery

Attach the canopy greenery garland along the front edge of the canopy. Secure at the four corners and let it drape organically in the center.

  6. 6

    Final adjustments and misting

Step back and check that both sides (front-facing and back-facing) look balanced. Mist all flowers before the ceremony. Take photos before guests arrive.

Pro tips

1

Asymmetric floral clusters (70% on front 2 posts, 30% on back 2) cost less and photograph just as well.

2

Canopy greenery is where you can cut costs if needed — front post clusters matter most for photos.

3

Bring backup zip ties — chuppahs always need more mechanics than you expected.

Common mistakes to avoid

Equal floral weight on all 4 posts — front posts are photographed way more.

Forgetting about the canopy until install day.

Not coordinating with the venue about load-bearing capacity of the chuppah posts.
