How to Attach Flowers to a Wedding Arch
Attaching flowers securely to an arch is one of the most critical mechanical skills in wedding floristry. Done wrong, arrangements slip or fall mid-ceremony. Done right, they hold in place for 8+ hours in wind and heat. This guide covers the attachment methods.

Step by step
- 1
Identify anchor points on the arch
Walk around the arch and identify the structural bars or joints where foam cages will be most secure. Avoid decorative accents that can't bear weight.
- 2
Attach floral foam cages with zip ties
Position foam cages at the chosen anchor points. Use 2–3 zip ties per cage for security. Trim excess zip tie tails.
- 3
Soak foam cages in water
Spray the foam cages thoroughly with water until saturated. Dry foam doesn't hold stems well.
- 4
Insert floral stems into foam
Insert pre-trimmed stems directly into the saturated foam. Push stems 1–2 inches deep for stability.
- 5
Wire any drooping or heavy stems
For heavy stems that won't stay in place (hydrangea, heavy clusters), add 22-gauge wire support looped around the stem and attached to the arch frame.
- 6
Final stability check
Gently tug on every cluster to confirm it's secure. If anything moves, add more zip ties or wire supports. Better to over-secure than have something fall mid-ceremony.

Pro tips
Use colored zip ties that match the arch — green or brown disappear into greenery.
Never trust foam alone for heavy clusters — always add wire backup for hydrangeas.
Saturate foam more than you think you need — drier foam means unstable stems.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using clear zip ties — they stand out visually.
Under-saturating foam — stems slip out.
Attaching foam to decorative arch parts that can't bear weight.
